Berlin-Wedding is a location with tradition in the heart of Berlin. Between 1887-1905 the AEG, a machinery production plant, was established in this location. In the meantime these buildings were modernised and in 1983 was opened the "Berliner Innovations- und GründerZentrum", BIG (Berlin innovation and business incubation centre) as the first German technology and business incubation centre of this kind.
In 1985 it was extended by the "Technologie- und Innovationspark Berlin", TIB (Berlin technology and innovation park) to be the first German Technology Park of this kind. Over 90 companies of the BIG/TIB are remarkably close to 14 research institutes of the "Technische Universität Berlin", TUB (Technical University Berlin) and to the "Fraunhofer Gesellschaft", FHG (Fraunhofer Society) directly in the park as well as to the "Humboldt Universität zu Berlin" (Humboldt University Berlin), especially to the Charité, HUB.
